Overview

Tolfama is an international improv theatre festival founded in 2011 in Tolfa, a hilltop medieval borgo in the province of Rome. Organized by the National School of Improvisation and Theater "Vicolo Cechov" of Civitavecchia, the festival specializes in site-specific improvised theatre - creating performances designed for the streets, squares, alleys, churches, and archaeological sites of Tolfa's historic centre. It has been described as one of the most important site-specific improv festivals in Italy and one of the country's few events that brings theatrical improvisation out of enclosed venues and into everyday life.

The festival draws 120-130 participating improvisers each year from across Italy and Europe, with daily audiences of 2,000-10,000. Programming spans three to four days and includes international workshops (typically 12 hours over three days) led by instructors from around the world, culminating in site-specific performances, plus interactive installations, concerts, and public events. The 2026 edition is the 15th annual festival.

Workshops

Each edition features workshops led by international improv instructors. The 2026 workshop leaders include Arees Witoelar, Rocio Barquilla, Yann Berriet, Charlotte De Metsenaere, Rui Pedro Neto, and Maro Lesioti. Workshops run over three days and conclude with site-specific performances staged in carefully selected locations throughout the town.
