Impro INvention 2026 is the latest edition of Improvention, described by the organizers as "Australia's original and largest gathering of improvisers from Australasia and around the globe" and also known as the Canberra International Improv Festival. Hosted by Impro ACT, Canberra's longest-running improvised theatre company, the event has been reshaped into a new biennial format that keeps its core while making it more sustainable. Over seven days, participants convene to workshop, perform, connect, and party.
The structure centers on intensive workshop packages: every participant is guaranteed a spot in a mainstage show that grows out of their intensive, with Friday and Saturday mainstage performances as the week's centerpiece. Early-week and late-night festival club shows run every night, and the week closes with a Sunday summer party and Canberra discovery activities.
Participants choose single or dual intensive tracks led by different tutors over 3-7 days (Monday through Sunday). All resulting performance formats are original creations developed during the festival. Optional one-off weekend workshops are also available. Participants are expected to have completed at least one fundamental recognised improv-specific course.
