Defrost Festival is an annual mid-winter celebration of improv and sketch comedy in Melbourne, organized by The Improv Conspiracy (TIC). Billing itself as "the biggest improv and sketch festival in the Southern Hemisphere," the festival features over 50 unique shows, events, and workshops across The Improv Conspiracy Theatre and Theory Bar. Founded by TIC artistic director Adam Kangas, the festival first ran in 2022 and has grown steadily each year.
The programming spans a range of formats - from epic 90-minute spectaculars and standard 60-minute premium shows to bite-sized 30-minute community performances. Signature events include The Ritual, a darkly comedic Dionysian-themed improv induction, and Royal Rumble, a 30-person competitive spectacle with WWE-style entrances and eliminations. Friday and Saturday nights feature late-night social events including lip sync battles and karaoke at Theory Bar. Workshops are open to all experience levels with no prerequisites, featuring local and interstate instructors.
The 2026 festival accepts applications for shows, events, and workshops. Show applications are due May 11, 2026, and workshop applications are due May 7, 2026 (extended from May 1). Details and application forms are available on the Defrost Festival Notion page.
